FAQ For BREED
Where did the idea for Breed come from?
I actually got the idea when I was watching Married at First Sight. The idea came when I was delivering early morning newspapers, a job I’ve had for the last eight years or so where I drive around for several hours at 2am delivering newspapers. I wondered what would happen if something like the meteor that killed the dinosaurs were to happy again and how people would try to prepare themselves for life after.
Who did you base Kyle and Ichiro on?
Kyle is a mixture of myself, and my sister. Ichiro’s looks are based on Choi Seung-Hyun, aka TOP, from BigBang.
Ichiro’s first name is Japanese, but his last name is Korean. Why?
I knew that I wanted Ichiro to be Asian. At first, I’d wanted him to be a refugee that had come over from Asia before it got swallowed by the tsunami, but I don’t know Korean or Japanese, and having him be an exchange student made more sense. I also did some research and found a story about a man who was Japanese-Korean and how difficult it was for him to be both nationalities and I liked giving Ichiro that sort of background. Ichiro is Japanese-South Korean and when his family died in the tsunami he decided to keep a name from both countries.
What did you listen to while writing Breed?
I’d actually watched the music video for Ariana Grande’s One Last Time just before writing and that sort of became the anthem for the book.
